Father Bernard Latus, SVD; Daniel Mezzalingua; Bishop Gabriel Malzaire; and Dr. Denzil Douglas, prime minister of St. Kitts and Nevis (l to r) celebrate the official opening of Immaculate Conception Catholic School.
"For years, the nuns were the teachers in both schools, providing a good education and discipline for all," said Father Latus, a Divine Word Missionary from Poland. "Ever since the nuns left, Church authorities have believed that the two schools should be merged. It was not feasible to operate two Catholic schools, side by side, sharing almost the same yard separated only by a small gate." When Father Latus became administrator of Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral seven years ago, both schools were on the verge of bankruptcy. "Mr. Mezzalingua invested in rebuilding and remaking the school that the Catholic community in St. Kitts could not afford," Father Latus said. "A special body, a board of trustees, has been formed to "re-create" the Catholic school and to ensure that this new school, which will be named after the parish in which it is located, will seek, through an innovative curriculum, to engage its students in learning that is dynamic, interactive and creative in preparing them to become productive and responsible citizens," said Father Bernard Latus, SVD, administrator of Immaculate Conception Co-Cathedral and acting chairman of the Catholic School Board.
"It will seek to make the students to grow and mature in a safe Christian environment," he said. "The philantropic gestures of the Mezzalingua family are well known not just in St. Kitts," Father Latus said.
