On Oct. 23, this year's awards were given to Harriet Saperstein, president of the nonprofit economic development agency HP Devco Inc.; Bernie Glieberman, president of Novi-based Crosswinds Communities; and the Rev. Jim Holley of Historic Little Rock Baptist Church in Detroit.

...
Bernie Glieberman, the second honoree, is a community developer, building homes and commercial properties. He is president of Crosswinds, a Michigan-based company with branches in six states.
Crosswinds is responsible for Woodward Place, the restoration of homes and building 125 new townhouses on Woodward Avenue in the once-wealthy Brush Park district, a 40-acre area north of the Detroit Tigers' Comerica Park.
"Keeping the old houses adds character to the neighborhood," says Glieberman."These houses, some more than 3,000 square feet, were originally luxurious, so we restored them back to what they were and added garages. We also built new townhouses and lofts. We're obligated to rehab six to eight more units."
The value of these houses, he says, is that they're attracting young people to move back to the city."They want a city life," Glieberman says.

RESIDENTIAL RESURGENCE: Builder returns to Detroit

"Every time we dig a hole we expect another surprise," says Bernard Glieberman, president of Novi-based Crosswinds Communities, which is building condos this year in the New Center area.

If selling prices were higher in the city, builders could absorb the delays and higher costs. But with new houses and condos in the city mostly selling in the $100,000 to $250,000 range compared to two or three times that in the suburbs, it's tough to make a big -- or any -- profit.
