...Bennett John PorchiranBennett John Porchiran, is Director of Music Ministries at St. Elizabeth Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a position he has held since 1971.
In that capacity he
has established and conducted children's choirs at all age levels from grades 2 through 8, youth choirs of high school age in addition to his
work with the adult and contemporary ensembles.He
has also taught music and conducted choirs and musicals in parochial and public schools for 23 years.An organist and church musician, Bennett has conducted choir tours through Germany, Austria, and Italy, as well as in Washington, D.C., Orlando, and Montreal.Listed in "Strathmore's Who's Who," 1999-2000 Edition for Leadership in Achievement in his profession, Bennett has vast experience in leadership and coordinating events.
This past summer his
Chancel Choir did a concert tour through Italy and performed at St. Mark Basilica
in Venice, St. Francis Basilica
in Assisi and St. Peter Basilica
in Rome. Bennett studied organ with Dr. Stanley Tagg, Professor John Raevens and Dr. Fred Moleck and earned a Bachelor's Degree from St. Vincent in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
...Since 1977 Bennett has been a member of the "National Association of Pastoral Musicians" (NPM) and served on the board of directors of the "Director of Music Ministries Division" (DMMD) of NPM for 11 years and was chair of the Professional Concerns Committee for 6 years.He
co-chaired the 1999 national NPM
convention in Pittsburgh.He is also a member of the American Guild of Organists. Bennett has been a member of Choristers Guild since 1976 and has served as the President of the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of Choristers Guild (1997-1999) and currently serves as Vice President.He
has hosted CG Children's Choral festivals.In June 2005 he
hosted the Pittsburgh chapter's first SWAM camp.Bennett
has facilitated and accompanied CG Choral reading sessions at the NPM
conventions and at the seminar in Grand Rapids. Bennett is a frequent contributor to "Pastoral Music," the journal of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), and recently co-authored "Director of Music Ministries in the Parish: Work and Remuneration," published by NPM.
A new document, "Annual Reviews" will be published this summer.His
most recent article, Choral Repertoire: Good Choirs Sing Good Music, has been included in the 2006 collection of articles entitled "The Choir in the Liturgy," which has been published by NPM
.He has also been a contributing author to The Chorister. Bennett
wife Patricia have been married for 30 years and live in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
