Director Ben Belarmino, PNP's Deputy Director for Operations and Task Force Hope commander, told ABS-CBN's "Umagang Kay Ganda" that the number of violent incidents is lower compared to the 2007 Barangay and SK elections.
Belarmino attributes the lower violence to the increased number of mobile checkpoints and more extensive security checks nationwide. A total of 543 gunban violators were arrested and 458 firearms seized by police since the ban was implemented last September 25. Belarmino added that the arrests and firearms confiscation this year is higher compared to the last barangay and SK elections.

Besides Bacalzo, the other contenders for the PNP top post are Deputy Director General for Administration Perfecto Palad and Deputy Director General Benjamin Belarmino, the chief of the PNP Directorial Staff.
Palad, Bacalzo and Belarmino are the second, third and fourth highest officials of the PNP, respectively. They are members of PMA Class of 1977. Of the three top contenders, Palad was the first to get a three-star rank, followed by Bacalzo and Belarmino. Palad will be retiring in April 2011, Bacalzo in September 2011 and Belarmino in March 2012. If Palad were appointed PNP chief, he would be serving only for seven months.
