But not everybody’s seen a mule show,” said Tennison, editor-in-chief of Western Mule Magazine in Marshfield, Mo.

Mules have long been known as the proletariat of the equine world, but mule-lovers say that’s nothing to be ashamed of.

When Ben Tennison asked announcers at California's Bishop Mule Days, one of the country's largest such events, why they liked being there, they told him in no uncertain terms:
Because it ain't no %#@!* rodeo.
"Everybody's seen a rodeo.Everybody's seen a horse show. But not everybody's seen a mule show," said Tennison, editor-in-chief of Western Mule Magazine in Marshfield, Mo.
All of those qualities earned mules an important place in history, Tennison said.

They're actually well-tempered, athletic and agile, says Ben Tennison, founder and editor of Western Mule Magazine in Marshfield.

"They're more dog-like than they are equine-like," Tennison says.
Still can't shake the movie notion of stubbornness and swift kicks? Then check out all kinds of mules for yourself at the Ozark and Mountain Mule & Donkey Days on Saturday and Sunday at Finley River Park in Ozark.
The offspring of a male donkey , a "jack" --and a female horse, the mule is Missouri's state animal, Tennison says.
People from Missouri's border states and as far as away as Pennsylvania will show a variety of mules, Tennison says.
"They're going to be riding them, and they're going to be doing barrel events. ... We're focused on making this show fun."
A don't-miss highlight: jumping mules."This is the bull ride of the mule show," Tennison says.
