Zambonis, Education & Nonprofit Boards: A Conversation with Ben Aase | Read More »
Social Venture Partners > Zambonis, Education & Nonprofit Boards: A Conversation with Ben Aase What's with the colors? Zambonis, Education & Nonprofit Boards: A Conversation with Ben Aase Ben Aase "I can drive a Zamboni," says Ben Aase without missing a beat. He was responding to my question about whether he has a secret skill and I had to immediately follow up with: "What's a Zamboni? (And for any fellow tropically-raised folks, a Zamboni is a giant machine used to resurface ice for skating.) "I was from Minnesota, so I had to learn to do something associated with hockey," Ben jokes. Zamboni driving was a college job for Ben, whose values and beliefs stem from his formative education (both in and out of the classroom). As a student in the public school system, Ben witnessed a combination of structural inequities and individual choices that allowed some students to flourish and others to struggle - an experience the remains a powerful driver in his work. Education was also a family business. Ben's father spent his career in higher education institutions, mostly in finance and administration, and his mother was a school teacher. "And a really good one," says Ben. "I knew I could never teach like my mom did." So Ben took a different path - weaving together his commitment to equal opportunity education and panache for business. As a principal with CliftonLarsonAllen (CLA), Ben now leads the Public Sector Group's national K-12 Education and Consulting practices - working with a range of foundation, nonprofit, and education clients nationwide to drive both organizational and field-wide change. Much like SVP, CLA aims to strengthen organizations for greater impact, which is illustrated in their recent video. In particular, Ben stresses the importance of organizations investing in governance and strong leadership. "If you don't get those right, it's hard to get everything else to work well," explains Ben. "And nonprofit governance is hard. People aren't just naturally good at it. It's hard to work outside of themselves to be stewards of the mission." Given this, I had to ask Ben what single piece of advice he would give a nonprofit board member. "Show up and engage," says Ben without hesitation. Join Ben at the SVP Global Conference where he will be leading a session on cultivating nimble nonprofits. You can also learn more about his career here. ▶Zambonis, Education & Nonprofit Boards: A Conversation with Ben Aase
