Rebecca Mitchell, assistant manager of Next Door Food Store on Cedar Street/U.S. 131 in Kalkaska, thinks a new highway is a good idea, mainly from a traveler's viewpoint.
noted that Next Door Food Store
currently gets both local traffic and Gaylord-to-Traverse City traffic. But many travelers coming north on I-75 to Shanty Creek or Schuss Mountain take 571 to avoid going through Kalkaska, she
said. This could change with the addition of a new freeway.
"If our town expanded a little more, if we had a 24-hour restaurant or something open later, we'd be a lot busier," she
said."We'd be a more upbeat town, even for travelers. If they expanded U.S. 131 and we had more traffic coming through here, maybe we could get some more businesses in here."
But is that a good thing?
"There's a lot of potential with the town," said Mitchell
