The "Man in Black" is back when Baxter and Taylor Clement present A Musical Tribute to Johnny Cash.
The tribute is an impersonation concert featuring Baxter Clement as Cash; his wife, Taylor, as June Carter; and local area musicians as The Tennessee Three and the Carter Sisters. Baxter, a Southern Pines musician and entertainer, is well-known in his own right. In 2008, he played the part of Buddy Holly in "Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story," which toured in four Southeastern states. Clement is a serious musician, having invested two decades as a student, practitioner and teacher of music. In high school, he was admitted into the elite North Carolina School of the Arts, and after graduation, he received a -bachelor's degree in music from Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music. He moved to New York City, where he achieved success in the band "The Blondes Inc. "I never could quite beat that ol' guy," Clement says. As a loyal fan of Cash, Baxter is OK with coming in behind the singer. "Ever since I was hired to do Buddy Holly, this is the show I've been wanting to do," Clement says. This year, the year Cash would have turned 80, seemed a good time to Clement to make the tribute happen. When Baxter was a kid himself, he met Cash in person. Cash's grandson graduated with Baxter at Vanderbilt, so Baxter approached the music legend and told him he had been a big influence on him.

Baxter Clement, who describes himself as "much more of a musician than an actor", takes on the role of Buddy Holly and makes it his own.
Baxter Clement, who is playing Buddy Holly, is a Southern Pines resident. Having grown up in the Sandhills, Clement went to the North Carolina School of the Arts and Vanderbilt University, before studying at the Mozartium in Austria on a guitar scholarship. When he came back to the United States, he spent several years playing in pit orchestras for such Broadway shows as Rent and Jesus Christ Superstar, as well as for a number of off-Broadway shows. He has also toured with various rock bands. Returning to Southern Pines about two years ago, Clement opened a music school and recording studio. "I wanted to give kids in a town like Southern Pines the advantages of my background and experience," he says. "I bring down musician friends from New York, like a professor at Juilliard, who give master classes." Clement grew up listening to Buddy Holly with his father, who was a big fan. Baxter Clement is 'terrific,' playing lead guitar."
