Barry Edelstein, Artistic Director of The Old Globe, will present "Thinking Shakespeare Live! on Sunday October 25th. In this fast-paced and humorous presentation, Mr. Edelstein will provide key skills to enhance our understanding of the Bard's fascinating language. Edelstein has taught Shakespearean acting at The Juilliard School, NYU's Graduate Acting Program, and the University of Southern California, and is widely recognized as one of the leading American authorities on the works of Shakespeare.
"I know that for some the Bard can be a heavy lift," said Edelstein. "I've put together this program to show that with just a few hints and tricks that are easy to learn and apply, Shakespeare's language can be as immediate and alive as anything in today's paper."
2016 marks 400th anniversary of the Bard's death and the Globe, in partnership with the San Diego Public Library, has been selected as the California host site for "First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare", a Folger Library national exhibition. After hearing Mr. Edelstein's presentation, you will be positioned to more fully appreciate and enjoy the events related to this commemorative celebration of the Bard.
Mr. Edelstein will speak in the Fellowship Center at The Village Church on Sunday, October 25. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6:00, with the program beginning at 6:30.

In 2012, The Old Globe hired a new artistic director, Barry Edelstein, who is one of the leading Shakespearean minds in the country. When Edelstein arrived and heard the sound at the outdoor theatre, he felt the existing system could do more in service of the text and merited a reevaluation aimed at better support for Shakespeare's words. Edelstein felt that audibility and clarity were areas for improvement, and that the balance of the system should tilt more toward enhancement than acoustic speech. Better amplification would absolve actors of having to "project" and thus would allow for more nuance and naturalism in their delivery.

"Barry asked us to work with New York-based consulting group, ACME Sound Partners to solve the challenges of the stage," adds Peterson.
