STUART , When it comes to basketball, Barry Aaronoff is a true globe trotter. After 24 years of coaching at the high school level in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Egypt and Austria, Aaronoff is back coaching basketball in the Sunshine State , but this time in the middle school ranks. Advertisement Aaronoff is a first-year coach for the 16-0 Murray Middle School boys basketball team, which will play in the quarterfinals of the nine-team Treasure Coast middle school tournament tonight.Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Stuart Middle School. After attending the University of Miami, the 58-year-old Aaronoff began coaching basketball and teaching at Lear School a high school in Miami Shores that has since closed. There the New York native met his wife, Patricia.Since then, the couple has spent about 24 years outside of the country. In June 2004, the Aaronoffs returned to the United States to be with Patricia's mother, who lives in Jupiter.Patricia now teaches at Murray. Despite his best efforts at retirement, Barry taught geometry at South Fork last year but did not coach for the first time since graduating from college. "I missed coaching," said Barry, who now coaches but does not teach. That opportunity came via Patricia, who knew the middle school needed a coach. "I never coached middle school before, so I had no idea what the level would be like," Barry said. Aaronoff, who coached in Europe for 15 years, was impressed at the quality of play at Murray. But still, the game in the United States is vastly different. The European game "is much more shooting," Barry said."It's faster.Shortly after teaching at Lear, the couple moved to the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Aaronoff coached for four years. Back in America, Barry and Patricia completed their master's degrees at the University of New Hampshire before moving to Cairo, Egypt, a year later. In Egypt, Barry coached Andy Kerr, the brother of current analyst and former NBA player Steve Kerr. After four years in Egypt, Barry went to Vienna, Austria, to coach and teach. With the job came lots of travel to different countries. "You'd get on a train Thursday night, sleep with the kids on the train, pull into, let's say ... Paris, Friday morning and play a game when school got out," Barry said. Aaronoff now is getting to know the Murray kids, who have the top seed in this week's tournament.
