In this lecture, Professor Spencer
will provide a perspective on this new literature, with particular emphasis on the forces driving international outsourcing.
The new literature focuses on relationship-specific investment, incomplete contracts, and also search and matching, as fundamental concepts that explain outsourcing decisions. Barbara Spencer (nee Swan) is the Asia-Pacific Professor of Trade Policy in the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in the United States.Her
research has mostly focused on the intersection between international economics and industrial organisation.
...Spencer was President of the Canadian Economics Association in 2005.She has served on the Editorial Boards of a number of journals, including the American Economic Review and the Journal of International Economics.
