With more than 30 years as an educator, Barbara Gailliard-Nowell
is known for her
dedication to instructional excellence.Retired from the New York City public school system, her
experience includes that of a classroom teacher, mathematics laboratory teacher, Mathematics Instructional Specialist and Staff Developer.Ms.Gailliard-Nowell's interest is in the development of mathematical understanding through the use of concrete materials as well as the exploration of mathematics and culture.She has served on the District Mathematics Advisory Committee.
As a liaison between the Local Instructional Superintendent and the school, she
provided turnkey professional training for all of the Superintendent's instructional initiatives on a school-wide basis.Believing that parents are an integral part of the school system, Barbara
has facilitated numerous parent workshops.Ms. Gailliard-Nowell
embraces a philosophy of ethics, ethnicity, and excellence.Morrisania Education Council
presented Ms. Gailliard-Nowell
with the 1980 Teacher of the Year Award.In 1991, she
was also honored as the recipient of Teacher of the Year Award presented by the Association of Black Educators of New York City
pursuit of equity and justice, prior activities included her
role as Vice President of the Professional Chapter of the Trade Union Women of African Heritage
.Ms. Gailliard-Nowell now serves as the Superintendent of the Sunday School at The Love of God Christian Church in Harlem, where she was recognized in 2002 with he Service Award.
Other interests include an active role in the complementary and alernative healthcare movement.Presently, Ms. Gailliard-Nowell
serves as the Secretary on the Board of Trustees, and Chair of the Education Committee of the Harriet Tubman Charter School
