In Honour of Dr. Barbara Mutch: Saying Farewell
In Honour of Dr. Barbara Mutch: Saying Farewell It is with deep regret that the Carey community is saying farewell to Dr. Barbara Mutch, Bentall Chair of Pastoral Studies and Directors for the Doctor of Ministry (DMin) and Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation (MASF) programs. As Vice President Academic from 2004 to 2014, Dr. Mutch directed the academic affairs of Carey Theological College, leading in the development of its DMin, MDiv and MASF degrees, and obtaining a ten year accreditation for Carey's academic programs from the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in 2007. She also taught at Regent College from 1996 to 2014, teaching a variety of courses including most recently the Seminar in Women's Faith and Development. In 2014, she was recognized as one of Canada's preeminent preachers with the Lester Randall Preaching Fellowship at Yorkminister Park Baptist Church. Dr. Craig Smith, Professor of Biblical Studies at Carey, describes Dr. Mutch's preaching: "Barbara digs deep into the text and allows the text to dwell in her before she shares this experience with others. She is also a wordsmith, who carefully chooses and connects words together so that the listener is drawn into the text, opened to God and pushed out to the world." Dr. Mutch is known for her love of poetry and fiction, and her ability when preaching to meld the literary with the biblical. Dr. Mutch considers it a gift to walk with men and women in a deepening life of God, and to explore together what it means to make a life in the way of Jesus. Two students shared their impressions of Dr. Mutch: Dr. Mutch will conclude her ministry at Carey in June 2015. She will be moving to Pittsburgh in the United States where she will take up a new position as Director, of Accreditation and Institutional Evaluation for ATS.

The faculty and staff recognize this honor and celebrate her many accomplishments. Three of our faculty speak for or all of us: Barbara, you have always had a memorable way of preaching, touching lives through your knowledge of poetry and of fiction. I'm so glad to see that Barbara was honored by being asked to be part of the Lester Randall Preaching Fellowship. I have had the pleasure to hear her preach on several occasions. Barbara digs deep into the text and allows the text to dwell in her before she shares this experience with others. She also is a wordsmith, who carefully chooses and connects words together so that the listener is drawn into the text, opened to God and pushed out to the world. Well done Barbara!
