Barbara Day Miller, Candler School of Theology assistant professor and author, believes worship can be more vibrant by recognizing that people experience worship in different ways.
Miller said that Dr. Corinne Ware's book, "Discover Your Spiritual Type," includes a spiritual inventory that identifies four types of spirituality.
Miller said, over a lifetime, people may shift from one type to another.
She believes it's important to know which types we are so we recognize our worship preferences, but this is not a solitary decision. Other types need to be part of the conversation.
"You need to find people who aren't like you to talk to about worship," she said.
An attendee asked, "How do you get the pastor involved [in worship planning]?"
Miller said worship planning is pastor dependent.
Miller suggested saying something like, "We think you're doing a great job.
TOPEKA-"Worship is the way we live," declared Rev. Barbara Day Miller, the leader of Encounters with the Holy: EmPOWRing Worship in Your Congregation Oct. 30 at Lowman United Methodist Church in Topeka.
Miller is the assistant dean of worship and music and assistant professor in the practice of liturgy at Candler School of Theology in Atlanta, Ga. She has authored two books, "A New Pastor's Guide to Leading Worship" and "Encounters with the Holy."
"The worship experience is dynamic; it's the moving in and out of the inner and outer circles," Miller said.
She believes liturgy is the work of all the people gathered to praise God and receive the sacraments.
"It's everyone's business to plan for worship in some way," she said.
Worship is multi-sensory," Miller said.
The worship service engages all our senses-seeing, touching, speaking, listening.
"We become our worship," she said.
Miller acknowledged that some people only hear the words, sing the songs and go through the motions during worship services.
The pastors need to be open to this," Miller said.
It's thought out," Miller said.
She added, "While you're worshipping, don't evaluate it-just do it."
"You can do the reflecting seasonally; you don't have to do it every week," Miller said.
She stressed that worship is all about the greater hospitality-all the ways in which you get out of the way and make a space for God's work.
Miller explained that hospitality involves how worship is led. It's using the right people for the different tasks, not just randomly choosing them. It produces better worship and better leadership within the congregation.
She added that throughout the worship-planning process, it's important to empower people who have great ideas to carry them out.
Miller provided a list of resources for worship planning:

In this year's worship conference, Barbara Day Miller, Dean of Worship at the Candler School of Theology, will present the POWR (plan, organize, worship, and reflect) process that she outlines in her book, Encounters with the Holy: A Conversational Model for Worship Planning. As a part of the Alban Institute's series on vital worship in healthy congregations, the POWR Model lends itself to any size congregation with any size budget. We will worship three times, and after each service Dean Miller will walk us through the planning process, challenging us to use the same reflection process in our own settings.
