Dr. Kitchell received her DVM from Purdue University in 1979 and her Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis in 1994.
She is the director of the Center for Comparative Oncology, Animal Cancer Care Clinic, Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Michigan State University.
She is board certified from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in internal medicine and oncology.
