In my last posting, "'Hello Barbie" Makes the Cover of The New York Times Magazine", I wrote about concerns expressed in a New York Times article about the impact "Hello Barbie", Mattel's new artificial intelligence doll, may have on children.  I found the article well written and interesting but ultimately tiresome.  I do consider Barbie to be more than a doll and an important part of our culture.  I do, however, also get frustrated with media coverage that seems to take a dystopian view of toys and how they are going to damage children and the future of the world.

Barbie will only become a more powerful cultural force by having, literally, a voice.
It was a rich experience as not only were the artifacts great but the people with me were as well.  We were led by Chris Bensch, Vice President for Collections at the Strong, and I was accompanied by Caroline Schwarz-Schastny, the great-great granddaughter of F.A.O. Schwarz; Barbara Isenberg the Founder and CEO of The North American Bear Company and Rebekah Kaufman a Steiff consultant, archivist and blogger.

Nearly 30 years ago, North American Bear Company began as a creative business enterprise of a new mother, Barbara Isenberg, starting a family in New York City in the mid-1970's. Her desire to find a teddy bear with the nostalgic charm of an antique toy and a contemporary sense of whimsy for her own small son prompted the start of a toy company creating unique, high quality plush bears that would appeal to both children and adults alike. In 1978, after perfecting a variety of sample bears, assembling a sales force and locating a small NY factory to produce bears, Barbara teamed up with her brother, Paul Levy, a Chicago-based lawyer and real estate developer, to form North American Bear Company, Inc.

Barbara continues as the company's Creative Director, running the New York Studio in the heart of Manhattan's toy district where she and the closely-knit design and production team develop each season's rich and varied collections.
Our 4 person in-house design team lead by Barbara Isenberg is the heart of our company.
