Board ChairSusan Annis introduced Barbara Brunzell the newly appointed Director of Development and Communications who will be responsible for expanding OACF funding sources and improving OACF communications and outreach. Both Minister Meilleur and Minister Watson spoke passionately about their support of the arts in our community, the new Director was eloquent in what she hoped to accomplish on behalf of the OACF, and the reception finished with an up-beat, slam-poetry performance by Oni the Haitian Sensation.

Barbara Brunzell Barbara Brunzell is the Director of Development and Communications for the Ottawa Arts Court Foundation (trade name Arts Court); a registered charitable organization that provides a forum for Ottawa's performing, visual, literary, and media arts through the provision of leading facilities, programs and services. On a daily basis Barbara can be found doing everything from creating a media and marketing plan to producing an event, developing donor materials to building partnerships in the community. A classically trained actress, Barbara started her career in the arts as a drama major at Canterbury High School in Ottawa. She went on to earn a college diploma from George Brown Theatre School in Toronto. After more than a decade as a performer she returned to school once again, earning her Bachelor of Journalism degree at Carleton University and winning the school's Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement. She spent the next eight years at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, where she assumed a variety of roles in both radio and television, including news reporter, arts and entertainment reporter, producer, co-host and host. Barbara's many reporting adventures include following Evelyn Hart for a year as she was making the decision to end her career as a prima ballerina, a tour across the prairies in Randy Bachman's minivan, a 10-day stint in Los Angeles doing a series on Canadians who had made it big in Tinseltown and working the red carpet at the Oscars. Barbara was also the driving force behind piloting a national arts unit that produced a long list of award-winning documentaries and specials for the CBC, earning her a Gracie Award, Blizzard Award, and Gemini nomination. Equally important is the more than a year Barbara spent as the Senior Producer and Media Manager for a local marketing company. Not only has she written, produced, directed, and narrated many promotional videos for the Ottawa firm's diverse group of clients, she has also utilized her vast network of media and arts connections to power many of its successful public relations and media campaigns. She also has proven her ability to develop and implement winning fundraising and marketing plans and lead a creative team to produce original high impact promotional materials. Her work has delivered increased exposure for a wide range of clientele including everything from carnivals to charitable organizations, from log home builders to heating companies. Barbara's career to date has been an eventful journey, but she knows her greatest work lies ahead. It is time to give back to the community that helped nurture her love of the arts, a challenge she feels honoured and privileged to take.
