Barbara Barta is a Registered Midwife with Bloom Community Midwives in Vancouver. She is currently on maternity leave herself, after the recent birth of her daughter Cadence Metta. She previously worked in a northern Quebec Inuit village in their Maternity Department, and operated her own midwifery practice in Kelowna called LifeJoy Midwifery. For six years she helped many families in the Okanagan valley with primary care for hospital and home births.
Barbara also assisted with some aspects of Avalon's ecovillage development initiative, and looks forward to contributing to the evolution of Avalon's health and wellness programs and services. She hopes to authenticate the incredible power and knowledge within all people as we strive for optimal wellness.
Barbara brings 16 years of education and work experience in health care, science, research, organization and service development. Following four years at McGill University and the University of Victoria, then a five-year program at the Seattle Midwifery School, she completed registration as a midwife. She also holds certificates in breastfeeding counselling, childbirth education, nutrition and herbalism.
When in private practice in the Okanagan, she held medical staff privileges at the Kelowna General Hospital and privileges at Penticton Regional Hospital. She has served on the Board of the College of Midwives of British Columbia, the Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) Quality Improvement Committee, the KGH interdisciplinary Perinatal Committee and the Okanagan Health Service Area Maternal/ Child Accreditation Team. Barbara actively worked with the Midwifery Task Force during the inception of legalized midwifery in British Columbia and continues to contribute to the advancement of individual and societal levels of health care with political activism and education.
