Lutz has owned the Wausau resale shop for 13 years and has sold the business. / Dan Young/Wausau Daily Herald Barb Lutz, owner of Standing Ovations Consignment Boutique inside Washington Square in downtown Wausau, has sold her business to Maureen Perez. "I'm very pleased to have secured a buyer and that the legacy of Standing Ovations will carry on," Lutz said. "I built myself into the downtown community, and it's the people I'll miss most of all." Standing Ovations sells pre-owned fine apparel and accessories for women. Since opening the 780 square-foot store in 1999, Lutz said she was very selective about the items she sold on consignment, building up her inventory with clientele from all over the country. "It was always my goal to sell quality merchandise, and I think shoppers always found an eclectic mix of fashion that made my boutique unique and interesting," Lutz said. "I was fortunate to have such loyal clients, customers and staff." The store will remain relatively the same under Perez's ownership, Lutz said, with a few fresh tweaks to be revealed in the coming months. "I look back over the past 13 years, and I wouldn't change a thing," Lutz said.

Barb Lutz walks a delicate line between thrift and quality at her downtown clothing boutique.
"I think people look for bargains ... and yet want to look good," Lutz, owner of Standing Ovations Consignment Boutique, said in her store as soothing music played in the background. Business at the 10-year-old shop, accordingly, has increased this year, with summer, in general, being even better than in 2008. During Artrageous weekend -- her strongest showing each year -- overall business was up 7 percent from last year despite the tough economy. Lutz discussed her store, her strategy and the importance of downtown businesses with the Wausau Daily Herald. Question: So what does your business offer to people? Lutz: OK, I offer quality, that is my No. 1 choice is quality. Lutz: With the economy situation, I've had more people parting with things, just because of, you know, the need for money. But on the other hand ... the stigmatism of consignment shopping has lessened because of the economy. ... I have quite a few new consignees (people selling in her shop). ... Just looking at the last weekend with the Artrageous event in town, I was really very curious to see what would happen with the economy. Lutz: I'm a total advocate for the downtown. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. ... (Her father and grandfather also worked downtown) so my heart beats down here. Lutz: Just to hang in there, those are the words I would say.
