B.J. Sams is the dean of news anchors in Arkansas. He's worked in broadcasting for more than 50 years. He joined Today's THV in 1982. He currently co-anchors with Alyson Courtney and Tom Brannon on "Today's THV This Morning," Arkansas' most popular morning news program. He has been in the broadcasting business for 55 years, 32 of those years in Arkansas. Sams was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., in 1935. He started out in radio in 1953 at his hometown radio station upon graduation from high school. He continued as a disc jockey at Knoxville radio stations while attending the University of Tennessee where he graduated with a B.S. degree majoring in industrial management. He was drafted right out of college in 1958 into the Army. He took basic training in tanks with Elvis Presley at Fort Hood, Texas.and he continued working at local radio stations in Lawton, Okla., while in the Army. When he was released from the Army, he continued working at KCCO radio station in Lawton. He later worked at stations in Greeneville and Johnson City, Tenn. In 1982, he anchored the news in Little Rock at KTHV where he earned several best newscasts awards from The Associated Press and United Press International. Ten years ago, Sams joined the morning show to work with Robyn Richardson and Tom Brannon. In 2000, Sams was named Broadcaster of the Year by The Associated Press. When he reached 50 years in broadcasting in 2003, Today's THV named its studio the B.J. Sams Studio. In November of 2007, Sams was inducted into the Arkansas Entertainment Hall of Fame.
