B.J. Sams has been in the broadcasting business for 55 years, 32 of those years in Arkansas.
Sams was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., in 1935.He attended Elizabethton High School where he played a trumpet in the high school band and played basketball making the all conference team in his senior year.
Sams started out in radio in 1953 at his hometown radio station upon graduation from high school.He continued as a disc jockey at Knoxville radio stations while attending the University of Tennessee where he graduated with a B.S. degree majoring in industrial management.
He was drafted right out of college in 1958 into the Army.He took basic training in tanks with Elvis Presley at Fort Hood, Texas.With assistance from his U.S. Sen.Estes Kefauver, Sams managed to get into the information office as a broadcast specialist at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.He continued working at local radio stations in Lawton, Okla., while in the Army.When he was released from the Army, he continued working at KCCO radio station in Lawton.He later worked at stations in Greeneville and Johnson City, Tenn.
Sams broke into television in 1964 at KTTV in Monroe, La., as a weather and sports announcer.In 1966, Sams came to Little Rock where he worked as an anchor at KATV.Following his arrival, the station became No. 1 in the market.
In 1973, Sams left KATV for a job at KHON in Honolulu, Hawaii.While there, he led the station from a poor third place in the market to a strong second.
In 1982, he returned to Little Rock to anchor the news at KTHV where he earned several best newscasts awards from The Associated Press and United Press International.Ten years ago, Sams joined the morning show to work with Robyn Richardson and Tom Brannon.

In 2000, Sams was named Broadcaster of the Year by The Associated Press.When he reached 50 years in broadcasting in 2003, Today?s THV named its studio the B.J. Sams Studio.In November of 2007, Sams was inducted into the Arkansas Entertainment Hall of Fame.
While living in Hawaii, Sams ran the 26-mile Honolulu marathon and finished with a respectable time.He was friends with Don Ho, Jack Lord and Jim Nabors.
He is also an avid coin collector and loves to read novels.He is an active member at Immanuel Baptist Church where he sings in the choir and a quartette.He travels the state giving his personal testimony about what God has done in his life.
Sams, a native of Tennessee, says Arkansas is his home and he plans to live here following retirement.
