Technological innovation makes mandatory CLE a realistic goal

It offers CLE on federal matters of interest to lawyers, said Aviva Rotenberg, CBA's director of professional development. The CBA's online model of CLE allows lawyers, particularly those in remote areas, to participate without the time and expense of traveling to a distant city to attend in-person conferences.

Online CLE has been hugely successful, Rotenberg said.
"We get groups of upwards of 200 and 300 people for these sessions nationally. Part of the reason why it's so successful is... that it's allowing access to education for people who otherwise have serious obstacles in front of them in terms of accessing CLE," she said.
For example, lawyers from Nunavut can participate in a program that, if held in Ontario, might be beyond their budget.
"For someone from Nunavut to attend an in-person conference in Ontario, it can be $3,000 just to travel (to the program)," Rotenberg said. The online program allows them to access inexpensive, high-quality CLE.
Women on maternity leave say they love the online format because it allows them to stay in touch with the legal world without leaving home, Rotenberg said.
Online technology can also promote accessibility for disabled lawyers. For example, the CBA hired a transcriber to provide the oral portion of an online CLE program to a deaf law student, allowing her to participate, Rotenberg said.
"The online format is allowing us to do things for people who otherwise haven't been able to participate," Rotenberg said. "As a national organization, that's important to us."
The CBA uses a web conference format for its online CLE.
"The audio portion comes through the phone, just like a conference call, and the onscreen portion is a PowerPoint (presentation) that participants see," Rotenberg said. "They don't actually see the speaker, they see the PowerPoint."
Participants watch the program from their desktop computers in their offices, Rotenberg said. The program is live, and all of the audience is online, but while they can all hear the speaker, they can't hear each other and the speaker can't hear them.
Participants can ask questions by typing them in at the bottom of their screen, Rotenberg said. The speakers have consultants who filter through the questions to avoid repetition and also to prevent inappropriate questions from appearing online.
"Sometimes people will ask a question that's very file-specific. It can represent a breach of confidentiality if the person is revealing too many details," Rotenberg said.
"Access is one of the driving forces behind the online program," Rotenberg said.
