Austin Dickson

Welcome Our New Executive Director! - Community Foundation

www.communityfoundation.net [cached]

Austin Dickson has been named the Executive Director of the 35-year-old charitable foundation, which makes grants to nonprofits in Kerr, Gillespie, Kendall, and Bandera counties and is the primary philanthropic resource for the region.
"We're thrilled to welcome Austin to the Hill Country," said John Hutcherson, president of the Foundation's board. Mr. Dickson starts on June 1st. A seventh-generation Texan, Austin graduated high school in Waco and attended TCU. After college, he moved abroad to earn a master's degree in religion from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He then relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he has lived for 13 years. There, Austin graduated from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. He also earned a master's in economic policy from Georgia Tech. Austin was a noted civic leader in Atlanta. Since 2012, he has served as the Executive Director of Literacy Action, one of the leading adult literacy nonprofits in the U.S., which annually advanced more than 2,000 adults towards employment and post-secondary education. Under his leadership, the organization's efforts were highlighted by Forbes magazine and The Chronicle of Philanthropy as well as at this year's South by Southwest conference in Austin. He previously worked for the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. Austin served on the board of a dozen Georgia nonprofits, including serving as board president of Community Farmers Markets, which operated 11 markets throughout the Atlanta area. He has a passion for organizations that make a difference and improve quality of life. For his professional and community work, Austin was named a "Top 10 Outstanding Atlantan" and selected as a "40 Under 40" rising star by both the Atlanta Business Chronicle and Georgia Trend magazine. Georgia Tech gave him its "Distinguished Alumni Award" just last month. Since 2007, Austin has also been a college professor. For nine years, he taught philosophy at Clayton State University in Morrow, Georgia; he currently teaches at the Candler School of Theology at Emory. "It's an honor to assume this role, and I plan to have a lot of fun helping the Foundation build upon its strengths and further develop the region's nonprofits," remarked Austin. "Our search committee met with many great candidates, but everyone felt that Austin was the leader the Foundation needs and that the communities it serves will enjoy working with him.
