"Most companies of this size would approach CMM assessment on a site-by-site basis," said Ashok Ramaswamy, manager of software engineering for Delphi Delco Electronics Systems."But we wanted to do an enterprise-wide assessment because we have global teams that work on programs around the world."
Delphi soon found out that certifying such a large software engineering organization was a ground-breaking endeavor.Looking for guidance, Delphi contacted its lead assessor, TeraQuest Inc., a firm that was co-founded by one of the primary authors of CMM."Our assessor didn't know of any existing model for this size of global organization," said Ramaswamy.
"Our software engineers come from different parts of the world to work as a team on specific programs," said Ramaswamy."Because of this, it is critical that we use one common process, independent of the site, country, or product line."
He notes that a significant benefit of common processes is that global teamwork becomes much easier.
And we've institutionalized our software process across all sites and product lines," said Ramaswamy.
"We are in a very 'elite' group, with roughly one dozen companies of our size," said Ramaswamy.
"The key element of Level 4 consists of quantitative process management," said Ramaswamy.
