Arthur Morrison, the founder of the 'mean street' school, does not wear well, or so it seems to me. Morrison claimed to have been a life-long friend of Kipling; and both were members of the group of young writers 24 THE KIPLING JOURNAL September 1971 that gathered round W. E. Henley, though it appears that Morrison did not meet Henley until after Kipling's departure from London in August 1891.
