PRESENTER: Arnold M. Washton, Ph.D.
This presentation will describe how to use moderate drinking strategies to engage, motivate, and facilitate therapeutic change in patients with alcohol use disorders. Clinical dilemmas, complications, and roadblocks will be explored including thorny countertransference issues with patients who continue to engage in risky drinking while trying to pursue moderation goals. The discussion will focus on practical nuts-and-bolts strategies that integrate cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, and pharmacological interventions. Case material will be used to describe a practical psychotherapeutic approach that guides clinical decision-making, especially during the initial "roller coaster" phase of incremental change. Bio: Arnold M. Washton, Ph.D has specialized in treating substance use disorders and related mental health problems for over 40 years.
