Arnold Ekpe has vast experience and a proven track record of banking, finance and investments in Africa.
He has served as Chief Executive of Ecobank and UBA, two of Africa's leading financial institutions. He previously established and headed up Citibank's Structured and Corporate Finance business in Sub-Sahara- Africa and was a partner at Capital Alliance, the leading private equity firm in West Africa.
During his career, Arnold, has led several landmark initiatives and transactions, including leading Euro-market financings for leading South African banks and assisting African companies and governments in accessing financing on the Euro-markets.
As a two-time and longest-serving CEO of Ecobank, he was responsible for the transformation of the group from a West African bank to the first truly pan-African banking group. In between, he was responsible for turning around UBA in the early 2000's. He is acknowledged as being particularly effective in strategy execution.
Arnold is a Director of the Nigeria Sovereign Wealth Fund and Honorary President of The Business Council for Africa Arnold holds a first class honours degree in mechanical engineering from Manchester University and an MBA from Manchester Business School and, earlier in his career, worked in the oil and aluminium industries. He is a dual Nigerian and British national and is married with 3 children.

He will act as a figurehead and ambassador promoting the Council's mission, values and objectives and offering thoughts and advice. Arnold spoke to BCA members last year and is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential African businessmen of his generation.

In December 2012, Arnold retired as Chief Executive Officer of the Ecobank Group after two periods at the helm, from 1996 to 2001 and, 2005 to 2012. In these fifteen years he overcame many early teething problems and was able to build and mould the first truly African-owned private sector pan-African bank. He left Ecobank having grown it into a resilient African institution with a presence in 32 sub-Saharan countries, assets of $17.2bn and a customer base of over 8.4m.
Arnold has also worked in Europe, South Africa and West Africa for Citibank, First Chicago and United Bank for Africa. He holds a first class degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Business Administration from Manchester University and Manchester Business School respectively.
Arnold is married with three children and lives in Oxford, South Africa and Lagos. He travels extensively, lecturing on and promoting pan-African private-sector initiatives in pursuit of his vision for a different Africa.
