"In the last two years the peace process in Israel and Palestine has been completely destroyed and there seems to be no hope for an end to the cycle of violence," Ariela Friedman, an Israeli delegate at the meeting, told reporters in Cape Town. Friedman, a professor of psychology at Tel Aviv University, said a talk on South Africa's transition to democracy given to delegates on Monday by the last apartheid-era president, Frederik de Klerk, was especially enlightening for the Israelis.
