Aref Karim, ACA: Managing Director & CEO Aref Karim is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of QCM.He carries overall responsibility for the company's executive management and QCM's investment strategies and research.Mr Karim qualified as Chartered Accountant in the UK in 1978 and continues to be a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.He left the UK in 1982 to join a multi-billion dollar quasi government investment institution in the Middle East.The organisation, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority ('ADIA'), is a unique institution that places investments globally in various asset classes, including equities, fixed income, real estate and alternative investments.Mr Karim was with the Alternative Investment department of ADIA from 1982 to 1995.During the fourteen years at ADIA, Mr Karim was involved in the design and launch of the first ADIA external hedge fund programme for the Institution.This programme has become the single largest investment programme of its kind in the global hedge fund industry.The objective of this portfolio was to generate absolute returns that were stable and consistent bearing no correlation to classical investments.Allocations to managers in the portfolio were substantial and today a number of them are the largest hedge fund managers in the industry.As the Senior Investment Manager at ADIA, Mr Karim was responsible for its investment policies, strategies and asset allocation in the Alternative Investment area.In this capacity he has actively conducted extensive levels of 'due diligence' on hedge fund managers.His role involved portfolio construction using quantitative and qualitative methods, and deciding upon the asset allocation for all of ADIA's investments in the Alternative Investment area.The success of this programme was the direct result of creating a portfolio of hedge fund managers using both 'long' and 'short' volatility strategies to generate an attractive 'alpha' for the institution.Mr Karim managed this programme until the summer of 1995 when he left the UAE to return to the UK and set up QCM.Mr. Haq works closely with Aref Karim to combine economic analysis and quantitative modelling in order to develop non-parametric robust investment methodologies at QCM.
