Excellent swims, especially by the juniors with April Hedges, Lois Martin, Michael Rees (2) and Tomas Gibson all gaining individual wins and Michael and Tomas being joined by Dario Kan and Kieran Rutter to win both the Under 12 relays.
Similarly, April and Lois were joined by Daisy Meffan and Erin Andrew to superb 3rd places in the Under 12 Freestyle and Medley Relays and Ace Taylor took an excellent 3rd place in the Men's Open Freestyle against top class opposition. Lois Martin took the club's only individual win of the night in the Under 12 50m Butterfly; a magnificent effort in this standard of competition with April Hedges and Michael Rees not far behind with second places in their respective Under 12 50m backstroke events. April Hedges and James De Brunner also won awards for the "Meet Best Swim" in their respective age groups. April Hedges, who can compete in the same competition next year, finished 6th in the 50m breaststroke and Lois Martin came 8th in the both the 50m butterfly and 50m backstroke events. April Hedges added to her medal haul by gaining another gold, this time in the Girls 10 Year old 100m Breaststroke and a silver in the Girls 10 Year old 100m Backstroke whilst George Brown earned another bronze medal in the Boys 11 Year old 100m Backstroke event. The girls 10/12 year old relay team of Natalie Andrew, Danielle Carbery, April Hedges and Lois Martin finished 11th in both their relays. 04 & 05 June - April wins Regional Championships in record time. Our new Regional Record Holder! 10 year-old April Hedges stormed to victory in the Girls Age 10 200m backstroke in the Regional Championships held at Crystal Palace over the weekend. The fastest qualifier in the heats, April really pulled the stops out in the final to go 5 seconds quicker, winning the event by winning by 6 seconds and setting a new Regional Record time in the process. April's time was so good; she would have finished a very close 4th in the age group above. Not content with that, April then went on to complete a full set of medals adding silver in the 200m breaststroke, and bronze in the 200m individual medley; and also reached the final of the 100m freestyle. A good weekend's work! Immediately after her backstroke event April ran down the poolside to give her coach Helen Andrews a well-deserved hug and share an emotional moment! Although April and George took the plaudits, six other Sutton & Cheam swimmers also qualified for the Regional Championships: Charlie Carr, Lois Martin, Rosie Heape, George Brown, Ross James and William Ward, who took 5th place in the Boys Age 11 200m individual medley and 200m breaststroke events. There were individual wins for April Hedges (3), Josh Eves, Dario Kan, Tomas Gibson, Michael Rees, Ross James, Rosie Heape, Athena Lewis Gkogka, Jacob Tidy and Rob Mason; and close calls for Aaron Prince, Alfie Brown, Emily Vandrau, Erin Andrew, Eve Tidy, Jodie Fraser, Killian Courtney, Natalie Andrew and Samuel Rees. The Open Men's Medley team of Jacob Tidy, Ace Taylor, Rob Mason and Chris Carr won their event and in the last event of the evening, the club took the blue riband event, the squadron relay with a superb performance from April Hedges, Tomas Gibson, Danielle Carbery, Ross James, Rosie Heape, Aaron Prince, Brooke Tafazolli and Jacob Tidy. Sutton & Cheam Swimming Club's April Hedges, Lois Martin, George Brown and Michael Rees helped take the Surrey Schools team to victory in the annual Surrey vs. Michael Rees took first place in the boys 50m backstroke, Lois Martin gained third place in the girls 50m butterfly, April Hedges also took third in the girls 50m backstroke and George Brown finished joint third in the boys 50m freestyle race. During the weekend George Brown, 11, gained a gold medal in the 400m freestyle event and bronze medals in the 100m breaststroke, 200m freestyle and 200m backstroke races and April Hedges, 10, earned a gold medal in the 200m backstroke event.
