Biographical Note - Anton Melnyk
Anton Melnyk has an extensive background in the field of law. He received his LL.M. from Harvard Law School in 1963 and was accredited as a Chartered Arbitrator in 1990. He also has two previous degrees from the University of Alberta. Aside from being Principal of Melnyk & Company, Barristers and Solicitors, Mr. Melnyk has acted as Counsel to the Classification Appeal Board, Public Service Appeal Board, Occupational Heath and Safety Council, the Alberta Labour Relations Board and Environmental Council of Alberta. He has also acted as chairperson in numerous labour, commercial, landlord-tenant, agricultural, automobile and electrical industry arbitrations. Mr. Melnyk has been appointed to various panels over the years, including the Gwich'in Arbitration Panel in 2005, Alberta Securities Dispute Resolution Panel in 2000 and as Arbitrator under the Western Grain Transition Payments Program in 1995. His professional memberships include the Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society, Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, Canadian Bar Association and many others. He has also published several works on various aspects of law.

Minister Strahl Announces Appointment of Anton Melnyk to Sahtu Arbitration Panel - News Release - Indian and Northern Affairs Canada MINISTER STRAHL ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF ANTON MELNYK TO SAHTU ARBITRATION PANEL Ottawa (July 31, 2008) - The Honourable Chuck Strahl, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, announced today the appointment of Anton Melnyk to the Sahtu Arbitration Panel. "Mr. Melnyk has a very distinguished background in his expert field of law," said Minister Strahl. With over 35 years of practice in a wide range of law, Mr. Melnyk's most noteable contributions include being Principal of Melnyk & Company, Barristers and Solicitors, holding an appointment with the Gwich'in Arbitration Panel since 2005 and acting as Referee and Adjudicator under the Canada Labour Code in 2002. He has also taught labour law and tax law in both the Law and Business Administration Faculties at the University of Alberta. The Sahtu Arbitration Panel resolves disputes in accordance with the Sahtu Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (section 6.2.1). The Panel is composed of eight members, including a Chair and a Vice-Chair, based on consultation and consensus (section 6.2.3). Members are appointed by the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians, following consultation with the Government of the Northwest Territories and Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated.
