Anthony (Tony) Zappa (PharmD, MBA) has an extensive history of leading a number of companies spanning an array of pharmacy-related industries. This includes nine years working with pharmacy benefit management (PBM) firms, and three years of international experience in London, United Kingdom and Johannesburg, South Africa.
He has worked with specialty pharmacies in settings that include mail order fulfillment and community-based retail. In the 340B Discount Drug area, he has three years' administration experience and additional time working with home medical equipment, internet pharmacy and prescription claims auditing.
An entrepreneur at heart, he has been instrumental in the startup of three highly innovative companies, one of which remains a leader in PBM data services and audits.
Previously Tony worked at Wellpartner, Inc. as Vice President, Operations and was later named Vice President, Business Development. He was instrumental in a turnaround for both the 340B and specialty pharmacy areas resulting in significant profitability. His approach to building new inroads to serve these market segments has been lauded as highly innovative and very successful. He created and executed a completely original approach to building 340B networks so that covered entities could obtain new savings from specialty pharmaceuticals by working with large managed care organizations within a safe harbor.
Prior to this, Tony was one of the original six people who started Truveris, Inc. As Vice President for Clinical Operations he helped to create a new and highly effective prescription claims auditing platform for health plans and sponsors. This invention attracted the venture capital needed to expand the company.
Over his career, Tony has returned several times to help grow Fairview Pharmacy Services, LLC. Most recently he was Chief Information Officer and Director, Specialty/Infusion Operations. He was able to achieve sales that reached £50 million in his division. He was also able to significantly reduce operating expenses by realising greater efficiency for three years in a row. Prior to this role, he managed the operational turnaround of Fairview's home medical equipment business that improved company profitability to the degree that it resulted in a successful sale to a third party.
At Chronimed/StatScript, and later BioScrip, Tony held multiple positions including responsibility for its 32-store retail specialty pharmacy chain. As Executive Vice President for Operations, he was able to maintain a positive growth in sales for each fiscal year that he was there. He led an initiative that resulted in the company obtaining exclusive US distribution rights for an effective and novel injectable drug to combat HIV/AIDS. As a co-founder of cranespharmacy.com, Tony also helped to pioneer the internet pharmacy distribution concept that is now a well-established business model in the industry.
Early in his career, Tony worked with Diversified Pharmaceutical Services which included three years of globetrotting in search of international opportunities to set up PBM or managed care programs. New programs were established in Australia, Japan, Argentina and South Africa, where he then became General Manager of DHS South Africa and Interpharm/HMS. He was headquartered in London, UK for a year while working with SmithKline Beecham's international division.
Anthony Zappa received a Doctor of Pharmacy and a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy, both from the University of Minnesota. After this, he received a Masters in Business from the University of St. Thomas, also in Minneapolis. Over the years he has presented to a number of national conferences and contributed to the professional literature.
Tony and his wife call Bloomington, MN home. However, each year he takes off time to volunteer his pharmacy expertise with medical missions teams. So far he has served on week-long stints in Ethiopia, Myanmar, and devoted a full year at a clinic in South Africa.
