Anthony La Rosa, Principal/Co-Owner
Tony took his love of tinkering with mechanical systems in high school and focused it towards a Masters in mechanical engineering. Upon graduating he was offered a position as adjunct professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology were he instructed numerous mechanical engineering students in laboratory coursework. Driven by the urge to create, he left the institute to take a position as product and tooling designer were he mastered the art of design for manufacture. This experience along with a strong educational background gave Tony the foundation to venture out on his own. In 1996 he joined Tri-Power Consulting to form Tri-Power Design, the mechanical division of Tri-Power Consulting. What started as a one man division has grown into a full fledged design, engineering and manufacturing company. With more than 20 years of design and manufacturing experience, he leverages this experience to develop innovative out-of-the-box cost effective solutions. He holds several patents and his work can be found throughout the medical, industrial, and consumer markets. When he is not at work, he is busy working on home projects and a muscle car restorations. La Rosa is homegrown visionary and is available to speak on panel discussions and relevant manufacturing topics in the New Jersey and the US as a whole.

Tri-Power Design co-founder and managing director Anthony La Rosa was thrilled to demonstrate three machines his engineers are creating: one automatically fills medication vials for clinical trials, another modernizes the production of staple guns, and a third is a robot that can identify product defects.
All three are products Tri-Power is making for New Jersey manufacturers.
Edward Laganis, left, director of engineering, and Anthony La Rosa, managing director and co-founder of Tri-Power Design.
"The only way you can compete against cheap labor is with automation," La Rosa said.
La Rosa calls it "reshoring" - and he feels the idea is gaining traction.
"(U.S. producers) can't match the labor rates they see in Asia, but the automation is the equalizer: It reshores manufacturing, it brings it back here," he said.
La Rosa said he is fighting a notion that automation takes away jobs. He said it's just the opposite. By reducing the amount of U.S. labor a product requires, automation "keeps jobs here," he said.
Tri-Power was founded in 1996 by three NJIT graduates who launched the company in the new-venture incubator on the school's campus in Newark.
La Rosa is joined by Edward Laganis, director of engineering, and partner Robert Mastice, who runs the Tri-Power division that provides staffing services to the utility industry.
"We started out doing new product development for the plastics industry - and within five years most of my customers were out of business," La Rosa said.
But La Rosa said the company's strength is being able - and willing - to handle a job of any size.
The company helped Surgical Concept Designs of Hackensack create PositionOR, a medical device that keeps the incision open while a surgeon is operating. La Rosa said he and his engineers are named on the patents associated with that product.
Tri-Power, in fact, will help inventors learn the ropes of new-product development, and it will serve small start-up ventures, taking jobs for as little as $15,000.
"There are not a lot of companies that do that," La Rosa said.
La Rosa said the company suffered during the financial crisis.
"A lot of corporations just stopped spending," he said.
La Rosa and Laganis are confident in Tri-Power's ability to respond.
Tri-Power Design's Anthony La ..., 10 Sept 2015 [cached]
Tri-Power Design's Anthony La Rosa (Principal) works with Mount Olive High School, while Kyle Hobin (Design Engineer) works with Clifton High School.
His goal was to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology.[1] The specific program that Tony and Kyle mentor is called FIRST Robotics competition, and it is aimed at Grades 9 through 12. It provides students, and their mentors, with opportunity to design and build a robot using a standard "kit of parts" and a common set of rules.[2] Anthony La Rosa decided to take on the role of a manufacturing mentor. Having numerous years of experience programming and operating CNCs, Tony taught students about the machine and manufacturing process from start to finish.

Anthony La Rosa Speaks at his Alma Mater - NJIT : TriPower Design, 22 Nov 2010 [cached]
In the midst of a packed crowd of engineering students and alumni Anthony La Rosa went home. The former ad-junct Professor at NJIT returned to a packed audience and discussed his passion for mechanical engineering. As a small business owner of an outsourced/design/automate and manufacturing house, La Rosa was candid about his career passion, making things that work. During the 45 minute lecture he commented on the last two decades of the lack of home grown manufacturing in the US as well as specific businesses challenges relevant to his own discipline. In the end, he was optimistic about the restoration of manufacturing returning to the United States in a slow incremental progression.
As a side note, La Rosa credits his mother for understanding his restless mind and the importance of following your dreams and core passion. He believes his family was key in helping to facilitate his career path that started at NJIT circa 1987. Anthony also mentioned that the key for a more profitable country in the 21 st century is a simple catch phrase "Made in the USA" that has been passed down by generations of innovative Americans. La Rosa is the principal and co-founder of Tri-Power Design, LLC.
