As matter of fact, there were no soldiers detailed to the PDEA from the time it was created in 2002 until 2006 when the current PDEA director general, retired AFP chief Dionisio Santiago, took over from the first PDEA chief, Anselmo Avenido, a retired PNP deputy director general.

PDEA Director General Anselmo Avenido Jr. identified the suspect as SPO1 Romeo Diego, alias "Boyet," assigned to the Camarines Norte Police Provincial Mobile Group. Some 30 grams of shabu worth P60,000 were also seized from the suspect.
Diego, included in the PDEA drug watchlist, was arrested at about 3:30 p.m. by joint operatives of the PDEA and Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Camarines Norte at the vicinity of J. Lukban Extension, Daet, Camarines Norte.
Avenido said the policeman was arrested after selling some 0.02 gram of shabu worth P1,000 to a PDEA poseur-buyer.

PJI :: National : 7 more drug suspects fall [cached]
SEVEN more suspected drug traffickers on the watch list of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency were arrested in separate buy-bust operations which resulted in the seizure of P100,000 worth of shabu last Wednesday, PDEA chairman Anselmo S. Avenido Jr. said yesterday.
"This is part of our ongoing anti-drugs operations nationwide. This is a relentless drive in pursuance of the Arroyo government's vision of a drug-free Philippines by 2010," said Avenido.
Avenido identified the suspects as Joven E. Enecuela, Jolito V. Dacula, Noel B. Baya, Mad A. Bucotan, Rafael A. Yasa, Nonoy M. Salinogan and Abdul M. Jervas.
THE DRUG-WAR: WHO IS IN CHARGE HERE?, 9 Aug 2005 [cached]
In an effort to clear the air, the PDEA chief, Anselmo Avenido, said yesterday the only anti-drug chief was the President herself, and the PDEA remained the lead agency in the campaign. He has no problem "reporting" to Barbers, Avenido said. But he stressed that if the retired cops Lim wants to help, they can report to law enforcement units.
President Macapagal-Arroyo announced the appointment of Avenido to head the PDEA on July 19, 2002, last year, and he was endowed with the title of "Drug Czar". (Susmariosep, everybody's a Drug Czar or Czar of something or other - we've had more Czars in this country than the Romanovs of Russia.)
Avenido and Lim, of course, as in the case of Barbers, have worked together in the past, and are on the best of terms.
After all, Avenido was always at the top of his class in the University of the Philippines, the Ateneo de Manila, and in his studies abroad. When he graduated from the Philippine Military Academy (Class 1967), he was "Baron" of the Academy which is, in broad terms, not strictly academic valedictorian but Tops in Everything.
Barbers, Avenido and Lim - a great combination in theory - but who's the real Czar?

Thus said Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency chief Anselmo S. Avenido Jr. yesterday of alleged efforts by drug syndicates to discredit the government as it intensified the national anti-drug campaign.
He said the targets of the demolition job are Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose Lina who is also OIC-chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board, PNP chief director general Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco, and himself (Avenido).
He added that the syndicates are riding on the al-Ghozi and other issues, and they are also using the so-called "text brigades."They will also utilize other parties to hold press conferences and conduct rallies in order to minimize or marginalize the anti-drug accomplishments of the government agencies concerned by highlighting the negative, he said.
"The syndicates are feeling the heat of the intensified war against drug prompting them to employ such dirty tricks.Their purpose is to lower the morale and determination of anti-narcotics personnel. They will not succeed because our anti-narcotics personnel are determined to eradicate the drug problem once and for all," Avenido said.
