Beltman and Dr. Ann Maest, also a scientist at Stratus, said any clean-up funds in Ecuador will have to be used to remediate soils, rivers, streams, and groundwater over a 1,700 square mile area that contains the survivors of five indigenous groups and tens of thousands of farmers who live off the natural ecosystem.
"If this were the U.S., the area would be considered unfit for human habitation and would be fenced off until it could be remediated," said Maest.

McGroarty addressed the EPA's use of scientific studies in the assessment, particularly those conducted by Dr. Ann Maest, formerly Managing Scientist for Stratus Consulting.
McGroarty called for EPA to conduct an independent and impartial investigation of the use of studies conducted by Maest, and cautioned against using the Assessment to prevent Pebble from entering the Federal permitting process.

As American Resources President Daniel McGroarty pointed out in an email to journalists on Friday, the flawed assessment draws from research conducted by Stratus Consulting and Ann Maest, the firm's managing scientist, both of which earlier this month admitted to having falsified research in a long-running high profile environmental lawsuit against energy company Chevron.
"Maest and Stratus claimed earlier this month that they had been misled by a plaintiffs' lawyer when they provided an environmental report detailing the damage done by Chevron subsidiary Texaco to areas of Ecuador. The regulator's review of the Pebble Mine cites Maest's work in conjunction with Stratus seven times. The review also cites Maest's work in conjunction with consulting firm Buka Environmental four times." The plot thickens when you consider that even before the Cabrera report admission, Maest had done consultancy work for anti-mining groups. One such group, CSP2, has stated on its website that Maest and a colleague at Stratus Consulting have provided technical assistance on geochemistry and hydrology for CSP2's work in support of a coalition opposing the Pebble mine in Alaska. Consequently, American Resources principal Daniel McGroarty has called for the EPA to "withdraw Maest's research from the assessment and conduct a thorough review of any and all work Stratus Consulting has done for EPA."

Mine Monitoring Issues by Water Year - oha

OHA opened the meeting with a presentation of our analysis of the monitoring data, and followed up with a presentation and the independent review by Ann Maest of Stratus Consulting, which laid out our concerns regarding the company’s analysis.

An Update On The EPA's Den Of Thieves . Last month we told you about the prime speaking spot that the EPA was affording to Ann Maest of Stratus Consulting at this week's EPA Hard Rock Mining Conference.
Dr. Maest and Stratus are being sued by Chevron, under federal racketeering laws, after Maest was caught on video appearing to agree to doctor data in a way that would exaggerate environmental damage and inflate multi-billion dollar damage claims in a long running environmental case in Equador. After Wizbang and others publicized Maest's participation in the conference she abruptly dropped off the program.
