As health and fitness director for the Stateline Family YMCA's Beloit
and Roscoe operations, Ann Hankins
said the YMCA has taken their programs to the next level.
"We notice there is an increase in membership and attendance the first of the year, but even more so when the weather turns cold and people bring their fitness efforts indoors," Ms. Hankins
"We offer a lot of options for exercise that appeal to a wide base of members."
One of the hottest programs going at the YMCA is Zumba, Ms. Hankins
"Zumba is so much fun it doesn't even feel like exercise," Ms. Hankins
"People dance, they sweat and they feel good.
This October, we added aqua Zumba for a lower impact workout but with all the same moves.
It's been very well received."
Another major refocus is on weight training, Ms. Hankins
"We are now placing more emphasis on conditioning and calorie burnoff," Ms. Hankins
"Members from 16 to their mid-40s don't just build muscle but also burn off calories and fat.
And they don't have to be perfect to get the benefits plus they can tweak their routines to fit their fitness levels and interests."
With its indoor walk-run tracks, Ms. Hankins
pointed out that the YMCA helps walkers and runners continue their summer exercise programs without fear of accidents.
"Another positive aspect of indoor exercise options is that they can use the equipment and facilities just about any time," Ms. Hankins
