Berlam Receives 2014 GNL Distinguished Leadership Award
Greater Naples Leadership (GNL) is pleased to announce that Ann E. Berlam has received the GNL Distinguished Leadership Award (formerly the Parke Wright III Distinguished Leadership Award) for her exemplary contributions to the Greater Naples community. The Distinguished Leadership Award is given annually to a Greater Naples Leadership member who strongly exemplifies the mission of the organization-to provide proven leaders with a unique opportunity to learn firsthand about the issues and needs in Collier County and to encourage the use of their skills in bettering the community. GNL President John Hannsz said, "Ann is a role model for all those who want to make Collier County a better place to live, work and play. Berlam graduated from GNL's Masters Class in 2002 and served as GNL President in 2006-2007. Berlam has also been active with Fun Time Early Childhood Academy, the Community Foundation of Collier County, and the League of Women Voters. In 2008, she was recognized as a Woman of Achievement by the Naples Chapter of the American Association of University Women and in 2013 as a Woman of Initiative by the Community Foundation for outstanding philanthropic achievement.

In 2007, the Governor appointed her to the Edison State College Board of Trustees, which she chaired during the challenging time when the Trustees removed the President of Edison from office, hired an interim president and then his successor.

Ann BerlamBoard of Trustees, Edison CollegeGreater Naples Leadership, Inc., past presidentWith her soft Southern accent and gracious manner, Ann Berlam does not fit anyone's image of a lobbyist.Yet, she considers her greatest achievement before retirement as chief lobbyist for the North Carolina State Department of Education to be her work in a bipartisan effort with the elected members of the state legislature to obtain meaningful education policies and best practices for more than one million public school students.A graduate of Rollins College with a master's degree from Duke University, Ann began her career in Washington as a legislative assistant on Capitol Hill before opening the first North Carolina office in DC for the Department of Education responsible for bringing the educational needs of that state before the Congress. With retirement and a move to Naples, she now chairs the Community Foundation Grants Committee and serves on the Foundation's board, chairs the Collier County Advisory Board for the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union and is the Immediate Past President of Greater Naples Leadership.Governor Crist recently appointed her to the Board of Trustees of Edison College serving five counties. She was instrumental in a cooperative effort between the college leadership and members of the Naples Children and Education Foundation that has resulted in a joint $13 million project for a pediatric dental building and an early childhood learning center on Edison's Collier campus.Ann is not all work, however. She enjoys suspense novels, bakingâ€"especially with chocolateâ€"water sports and fun flying with her husband, Bob, as his unofficial co-pilot.Her greatest inspiration?Ann says it's her parents who instilled the belief she could achieve any goals she set for herself and that it is important to use her skills to help others.
