In 1984, Ani and her husband Rudi moved from Hungary to California when he was offered a position in a Palo Alto-based pharmaceutical company.
They have been here ever since.
Since Ani did not have a work permit, she started volunteering at the Albert L. Schultz JCC (now the Oshman Family JCC) at its old home at the Terman site on Arastradero Road.
At the time, the JCC needed someone to run their snack bar.
Fortunately for them, Ani loved cooking and entertaining and accepted the position.
Ani had fun doing this for two years while waiting for her green card to come through.
"It was wonderful to see those people enjoying my cooking," said Ani.
"I snuck in some of my Hungarian recipes and they were a hit!"
After receiving her green card, Ani was offered the CFO position at the JCC.
Ani remembers facing the dilemma of how to provide enough classroom and office space for the expanding school each year.
"We always got creative and made sure that the school had the accommodations it needed," said Ani.
"Watching the school rise from renting the first classroom at the JCC to becoming the great school we have today was wonderful."
After 13 years at the JCC, Ani left to become CFO of the Pacific Autism Center for Education.Six years later, in 2008, Ani jumped at the chance to become CFO at Hausner when the position became available, giving her the opportunity to become part of the school and community she had come to know so well.As our CFO, Ani is responsible for the financial well-being of Hausner.
Ani works closely with the Head of School, the Board, and is the staff representative for a couple Board committees.Of recent note, Ani helped the Finance Committee secure the construction loan to build the Graziella and León Troper Center for Arts & Athletics and sat on the Design Committee as it was being built.
"One of the things I enjoy most about working at Hausner is the people - my colleagues, the Board members, the committee members," said Ani.
"And I love what I do - the challenges and the problem solving.
I happily come to work every morning!"
When Ani is not working at Hausner, she enjoys spending time with her children and three grandchildren.
Her hobbies include knitting, cooking, entertaining, attending movies, theater, concerts, opera, and travelling to Europe and Australia where she has family.
Another hobby she enjoys is doing graphic design.
Ani is excited about the completion of the new Troper Center for Arts & Athletics and the success of our L'Dor VaDor campaign and looks forward to all the exciting activities that will take place in our new and expanded facilities.
Ani Varro, CFO
Our Chief Financial Officer, Ani Varro, joined Hausner in 2008 after her friends who worked at Hausner encouraged her to join the team when they heard there was an opening for a CFO.As our esteemed CFO, Ani is in charge of Hausner's budget, ensuring the financial integrity of the school, strategically aligning the budget process with Hausner's mission, and preparing financial analyses and reports for the Board of Directors.Ani is an active participant at Board of Directors meetings, as well as in Finance Committee meetings.
"I enjoy working with numbers and helping Hausner to be financially responsible.
Working at a non-profit is ideal, giving me the opportunity to wear different hats - such as providing in-house graphic design services, in addition to my responsibility as the CFO," Ani explained.
Ani has been involved in monitoring the construction of our new Center for Arts & Athletics -- working on the Design Committee, meeting with architects, and overseeing the financial portion of the project.
"I feel immense pride in our new building and am looking forward to its completion and being able to take full advantage of our new, fabulous campus," Ani shared.
In her free time, Ani enjoys cooking - especially preparing traditional Hungarian dishes from her native country.
Other passions include spending time with and knitting for her three grandchildren.
In her youth, Ani was also a competitive ice skating dancer and a bridge player.Prior to joining Hausner, Ani served as the CFO at the Palo Alto JCC for thirteen years, and was the CFO of the Pacific Autism Center for Education (PACE), a non-public special education school, for seven years.
When Ani first moved to the States from Hungary in 1984, and before she received her green card (immigrant visa), Ani volunteered at the JCC where she established and managed a popular snack bar.
