The WNC council
began their capacity building work in 2013 with the help of WNC Nonprofit Pathways, who laid the groundwork for the council to receive Organizational Coaching and the Board Best Practices training, along with assistance in acquiring a Capacity Building Grant through The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina
of WNC received the grant which provided the organization with a consultant to guide them through a year-long strategic planning process.
Angela Kemper of HunterKemper Consulting began guiding the council in January 2014 through extensive council data collection, the completion of a survey by staff and board members, an all-day Board Planning Retreat and subsequent meetings.
The final draft of the plan was approved in June 2014.
