When it comes to smiles, Andy Mason
is downright serious.
Andy is a local singer and songwriter, and he's an enthusiastic backer of Smile Train, an international nonprofit agency that funds corrective cleft palate surgery for poor children in developing countries.
"A smile is the most basic form of communication that we all use," Andy
"It just didn't seem fair that lacking access to a simple, inexpensive surgery could condemn a child to a life of exclusion and humiliation."
began supporting Smile Train
with other members of his
family in 2007.
In 2009, he
wrote a song in the organization's honor called (most appropriately) "Smile
"So far, through sales of the song, the book, and tip jar donations," Andy
says, "we have raised $2,970."
Each surgery costs $250, so Andy
is only a few bucks shy of funding an 11th life-changing surgery for children he'll likely never meet.
