Sept. 11 not a day for selling, 7 Sept 2002 [cached]
"It's not going to be a huge commercial day for us," says Andrew Shenkan, sales manager at WBRZ-Channel 2.
WBRZ, a local ABC affiliate, plans to run ads on Sept. 11, even though much of its usual programming will be pre-empted by ABC, which will be ad free that day, for the most part, supported by a handful of corporate underwriters.
WBRZ will run regular ads during the 5 o'clock news, during afternoon game shows and early in the morning. Many local sponsors are skipping the day, though.
"Mainstay advertisers are avoiding it because they don't know what the (national) network's message is going to be," Shenkan says."They don't want to be on alongside the towers falling again . . . It's hard to make that come alive in an advertiser's office."
Fox News, Fox, the Discovery Network stations and MSNBC will be ad-free that day.The major networks,ABC, NBC and CBS,are selecting tasteful sponsors or underwriters.
All told, if television networks don't show ads at all Sept. 11, they stand to lose millions in collective revenue.
