Dr. Andrew Morris-Singer, the president and co-founder of Primary Care Progress, told the New York Times (NYT) that close to half of medical students show an interest in primary care on their first day of classes.
By the third year, that falls to 20 percent.
The actual number of students who enter primary care specialties is even smaller, at less than 15 percent.
"There's a culture of discouragement that exists in most medical schools around primary care," said Dr. Morris-Singer

Dr. Andrew Morris-Singer is the President and Founder of Primary Care Progress (PCP), a Massachusetts based, national organization that aims to bring together up and coming leaders and game changers in the primary care arena.
With more than 15 years of experience as a community organizer and advocate, Dr. Morris-Singer
uniquely refined take on the value of innovation and collaboration to the advancement of primary care.
A graduate of and now lecturer at Harvard Medical School
, Dr. Morris-Singer
has gone on to teach in the Department of Family Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University
and in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at The University of Utah
has been featured on media outlets including NPR

and speaks regularly at academic medical institutions and professional conferences across the country.
