Andrew Meade, director of International Student Services at Vassar College, says the group will use its award to strengthen its mission - first, to increase students awareness of Haiti, second, to purchase artwork from Haiti to sell in the United States and return the gross profit to the artists.
The flagship program is in Chermaitre, a rural community in northern Haiti that is reachable by a two-day drive and a two-hour hike. In this town, the Vassar Haiti Project has built a clinic and a schoolhouse, pays the local teachers salaries, operates a water purification system and organizes a womens business cooperative. We're a small nonprofit and even though we're affiliated with Vassar, we dont receive any funds from the college, says Mr. Meade. We're humbled and thrilled to be the recipient of this gift, says Mr. Meade.

VHP co-founder Andrew Meade explains, "We have provided a way for the artists to help the people of a village; it is Haitians helping Haitians.

The program's founders, Andrew and Lila Meade, both have personal connections to the country - Lila's mother grew up there, and Andrew graduated from high school in the country while his father was involved with the international diplomatic service. Andrew Meade is the director of the Office of International Studies at Vassar and thought the college would make a great host site for the sale. Families usually won't send their children to school without incentives," Andrew explains. For more information about the sale, contact Andrew Meade at 845-797-2123.

Director of International Services Vassar College I used Ekaterini's services as part of a Wellness Retreat that I had this winter. The goal was to offer my guests a light to moderate hike in the Mohonk Preserve and Ekaterini exceeded my expectations. She guided us through a very scenic trail that no one had ever hiked before and my guests were beyond pleased.

Founded by Andrew Meade, director of international services at Vassar College, and his wife, Lila, VHP has raised more than $1,000,000 since 2001.
The money has gone to extraordinarily good use, supporting various projects in Chermaitre. Since founding the non-profit project, Lila and Andrew Meade have made several trips to Chermaitre, bringing with them Vassar students and other volunteers from the Hudson Valley area.
