St Austell Voice, which cost about £40,000 to launch, is independent newspaper publisher Andrew Laming's second title in the county, joining the Newquay Voice, which he launched in 2001.
The St Austell paper launched claiming two front-page exclusives on a Methodist minister's husband who was jailed for harassing her and a police constable who was caught drink driving. The launch follows sweeping cost cuts and redundancies at the major regional publishing groups following difficult trading conditions, but Laming said that being a small paper will be less damaging. He said: "It shows another way forward for newspapers; going back to basics. Deputy editor at Newquay Voice, Matt Bond, has taken over as editor from Laming.

Andrew Laming from the NewquayVoice, and Des Evans, chair of Newquay Road Runners, flew out to Rio yesterday (Tuesday) where they will be staying for the next three weeks for the games which run from August 5 to 21.
They will be joining thousands of volunteers from around the world at what are officially known as the Games of the 31st Olympiad, where 28 sports, and 41 disciplines, will be contested by around 10,000 athletes, including 366 from Great Britain. Andrew will be working at the Youth Arena which is hosting basketball and modern pentathlon. Des will be working in the transport division responsible for getting athletes to their events on time. Before leaving for Rio, Andrew told the Voice: "I thought the London Olympics were so amazing I wanted to get involved in the next one, and particularly it being in Rio.

Voice publisher Andrew Laming is aiming to raise more than £2,000 for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent in time for the London Marathon next Sunday.
With two weeks to go Mr Laming still had more than £800 to raise. But the help of a hardworking group of local bikers has given a last minute boost to fundraising efforts. Mr Laming explained: 'We organised a second cream tea car wash on Saturday which raised £225, but that still left a long way to go to our target." Mr Laming said:'When we counted the money we were astonished how much we had raised. We's expected £200-£300 at best, but the total was £627, incredible. 'The Rowing Club has always been fantastic at raising money for charities, it's something they do all the time, and it reminds you what a nice town this is to live in when you have people as generous as this." Mr Laming's fundraising total currently stands at £1,785.93 with more pledges in the pipeline. To donate to the CLIC appeal go to www.justgiving.com/andrewlaming or email andy@newquayvoice.co.uk. Mr Laming and several other Newquay runners take part in the London Marathon on April 25.
