St Austell Voice, which cost about £40,000 to launch, is independent newspaper publisher Andrew Laming's second title in the county, joining the Newquay Voice, which he launched in 2001.
The St Austell paper launched claiming two front-page exclusives on a Methodist minister's husband who was jailed for harassing her and a police constable who was caught drink driving. The launch follows sweeping cost cuts and redundancies at the major regional publishing groups following difficult trading conditions, but Laming said that being a small paper will be less damaging. He said: "It shows another way forward for newspapers; going back to basics. Deputy editor at Newquay Voice, Matt Bond, has taken over as editor from Laming.

Newquay Voice publisher Andrew Laming will run the London Marathon later this month, and has been collecting cash for the cancer care charity in the build up to his effort.
In the drive so far Andrew has raised £1,000, and hopes to raise the same again before the race. Andrew continued: "CLIC Sargent is an amazing charity and takes total care of a family in need, with no expense spared. "A friend of mine received miraculous help from CLIC Sargent, and this made me aware of the truly special work the charity does." Andrew will be offering his services as a car washer on Saturday, April 10, where for just £10 drivers will be offered either a cream tea or barbecue food while they wait for their vehicle to be polished spotless. The second fund raise will take place on Sunday, April 11, and will run from noon until the early evening. Local biker "Porky" is helping to organise the event, and will take part throughout the day. Porky said: "We are going to go around pubs in town collecting money on three Harley Davidsons and two or three trikes, then we"ll end up at the Rowing Club for a gig. "We"ll be firing it up at about 3.30pm, when Jez Luton and I will be playing songs until the evening." Entry will be free, but there will be buckets to collect for CLIC Sargent throughout the night. Andrew has been training with the Newquay Roadrunners, who are taking part in the Paris Marathon this weekend, and Andrew"s run will take place on Sunday, April 25. All are welcome at the car wash this Saturday, so to book a slot call Andrew on 07737 536010.
