Dr. Kiragu is currently the Interim Chief of Pediatrics. As chief, he has continued the strong tradition of exceptional care without exception for children here at HCMC that started under the leadership of Dr. Richard Raile, the first Chief of Pediatrics, over 60 years ago. Under his leadership, the department continues its strong commitment to research, resident and medical student education as well as growth of the departments community engagement. Dr. Kiragu has served as the Medical Director of HCMC's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) since 2003. Under his leadership, the PICU has provided extraordinary care to critically ill and injured children. Notably, the PICU has achieved outstanding outcomes compared to other PICU's across the country using national benchmark data. Dr. Kiragu has considerable experience and expertise in neurocritical care and the management of neurotrauma. He serves as Co-Medical Director of the Pediatric Brain Injury Program at HCMC which since 1989, has served over 4,000 children with acquired brain injuries. Dr. Kiragu is also passionate about injury prevention and was awarded a $200,000 grant through the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation to establish an Injury-Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK) site in Minneapolis at HCMC, with a goal of studying and promoting injury prevention across the state. He currently serves on the national board of IFCK and is also a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Injury, Violence and Poison Prevention. Locally, he serves on the Advisory Board of Safe Kids, MN. Dr. Kiragu is also a passionate advocate for children and is President-Elect of the MN Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics where he works with other pediatricians to improve the lives of Minnesota's kids. He is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Minnesota. He completed his undergraduate studies at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada and subsequently graduated from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC. He served his residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at the University of Minnesota. As a pediatric intensivist at HCMC, one of Minnesota's premier Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Centers, he has considerable expertise in the management of critically injured children particularly those with severe traumatic brain injuries. He is also engaged in injury prevention efforts with Injury Free Coalition for Kids Minneapolis and serves on the boards of Safe Kids Minnesota and the Midwest Injury Prevention Alliance. Dr. Kiragu is an active advocate for children at the state level and is President-Elect of the board of directors of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
