The Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency (VACCA) welcomes the appointment of Andrew Jackomos as Australia's first Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People, but says he must hold governments accountable for their commitment to improving outcomes for Aboriginal children in Victoria.
Mr Jackomos has made a major contribution to justice for Aboriginal people in Victoria through his work within the Department of Justice. With several decades of experience within Australia's public service, his knowledge and experience of working within government will be invaluable as he takes on the the task of reducing the numbers of Aboriginal children coming into care and ensuring that those within it have their rights respected and remain connected to their communities and families.
"Mr Jackomos comes from a large and strong Yorta Yorta family who have made significant contributions to the rights of Aboriginal people across several generations," said Professor Bamblett.
His appointment will encourage those of us working within the Aboriginal community services sector because we know Andrew, his work and his understanding of issues impacting on Aboriginal family life and Aboriginal children in Victoria".
