Andrew Czeizel, Hungary
Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Community Control of Hereditary Diseases (1984-) and Scientific director of Foundation for the Community Control of Hereditary Diseases (1991-).
Andrew Czeizel is Professor in the Faculty of Genetics, Eötvös Lóránd University of Sciences, Budapest and Invited Professor at the Kossuth Lajos University of National Sciences, Debrecen.
He has editorial responsibilities with several scientific journals (American Journal of Medical Genetics, Journal of Medical Genetics, Human Genetics, Congenital Anomalies) and has won major awards from Hungary and the USA.
He led the establishment of the Hungarian Congenital Abnormalities Registry, 1970, and Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Abnormalities, 1980 and has published his research widely.
As a volunteer consultant to the UMC, he reviews the results of the regular computerised screenings of ADR reports in foetal disorders and female reproductive disorders.

Professor Andrew Czeizel, MD, PhD, DmedSci, is known internationally in the field of congenital anomalies and particularly in the prevention of such anomalies.He is giving a public lecture on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at 9 am in the Libin Lecture Theatre, University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine, 3330 Hospital Drive NW.
Dr. Czeizel is available for interviews with reporters at 10:30 am in the Libin Theatre immediately following his lecture.
Dr. Czeizel is currently the director of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for the Community Control of Hereditary Diseases, and scientific director of the Foundation for Community Control of Hereditary Diseases in Budapest, Hungary.
He has authored hundreds of papers in peer-reviewed journals as well as four books on congenital anomalies published in English.Dr. Czeizel was the first scientist to show that folic acid should be used before and after conception to prevent cardiovascular malformations and urinary tract defects.

Andrew E. Czeizel, MD, PhD is the scientific director of Foundation for the Community Control of Hereditary Diseases, Budapest, and professor of Faculty of Genetics, Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences. He was the president of European Environmental Mutagen Society, one of founders of International Clearinghouse for Birth Defects Monitoring Systems, and director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Community Control of Hereditary Diseases. Dr. Andrew E. Czeizel, the scientific director of Foundation for the Community Control of Hereditary Diseases in Budapest, compared pooled data from two Hungarian trials using a multivitamin containing 800 micrograms of folic acid and the data of the Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Abnormalities using high doses of folic acid.Dr. Czeizel found that multivitamins containing 400-800 mcg's of folic acid was more effective than a high dose of folic acid alone in reducing neural tube defects.
