So first with us is Andrea Jao.
She is a lecturer and director with the economics department at the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches money and banking and macroeconomic principles. Prior to this Andrea was a senior research analyst in charge of small and mid-cap banks at Lehman Brothers. She has nine years of experience covering regional banks across the country. She graduated from New York University in 2000 with a Ph.D. in economics where she focused on monetary policy, international business cycles, and financial intermediaries. Take it away Andrea. Andrea:Thank you, Heather. Heather: Thank you, Andrea. Last time I checked, the issues that relate to derivatives I haven't found yet in my reading and maybe Peter and Bob and Andrea can talk about this, but I didn't realize that they gave rise to the problems that we're facing. Heather: So based on your answer and Bob's, Andrea there seems to be little doubt that the crisis or the coming regulation has already had and will have a huge impact on the business model for banks. Andrea:That's a big question, Heather. Andrea: Well, yes, new regulations will have a lot to do with how regional banks structure themselves in coming years. And I say again offsetting that some is probably the stability of the returns, which I think is something Andrea brought up, in a back to basics business model with higher equity funding there ought to be more stable return. And in the meantime I'll throw another question back to Andrea. The crisis was obviously pretty indiscriminate when it comes to the size of the banks that suffered here. Going forward how will the drivers for small and midsized banks be different than those for the largest institutions? And along those same lines how will the performance of regional and community banks do you think actually impact the U.S. economic recovery? Andrea: Fantastic question, but before I directly answer that question I'd just like to pile in some more about fair value accounting. Andrea: Well, just to jump in. Coming out of the crisis everyone has to be smarter about what they do and hopefully we don't forget the lessons of the crisis too early on.
