Amyas Gilbert, 2nd dan Aikikai
started practising Aikido
in 2004 in Vienna, where he
lived for half a year before attending university.
Under the instruction of Karl-Heinz Reiter, 4th dan Aikido
and 4th dan Iaido, Amyas
trained intensively to gain a solid grounding in both unarmed practice and sword work.
The following year, Amyas moved to Brighton to study Psychology at the University of Sussex.
discovered the Brighton Aikikai
attended all the classes of the club's Aikikai-graded instructors Mark Hale 3rd dan, Nik Doyle 4th dan and Phil Rozier 4th dan, as well as the regular courses run by Pascal Durchon 5th dan.
has also spent much time abroad, attending courses of various Aikikai teachers, particularly Philippe Gouttard 6th dan, Christian Tissier Shihan 7th dan, as well as Seishiro Endo Shihan 8th dan.
In March 2010, Amyas
received his Shodan from Pascal Durchon, and then 2nd dan in November 2012.
Over the years, Amyas has been following Phil's instruction closely in his efforts to improve his own practice and to become a better teacher for the club.
