, human resources coordinator for Santa Barbara County
, is proud of the fact that Santa Barbara County was a pioneer in the on-line job application."We really encourage people to apply for any position with the County on-line," says Ms. Ramos
."We were the first agency in the state to set up a system for people to apply for a position on-line.And it makes it very easy for people, because they can apply for any job from home on their computer. It's good for us, too, because it downloads directly into our tracking system which means our clerks don't have to do the data entry, and also means they're not going to type in somebody's address incorrectly. So it has benefits for the candidate and for us."
The County just launched the on-line application process last December and, according to Ms. Ramos
, "We're already receiving a little more than half of our applications that way."
The County has a computer set up in their lobby at 1226 Anacapa Street, Ste. 1, so that anyone walking in off the street -- who may not have internet access at home -- can sit down and apply for any position available.Positions are advertised in a variety of ways, but print is still the primary vehicle for making positions known to the community."We have a variety of media that we use, but we still use print quite a bit.We actually consider our web site to be a pretty good marketing tool.We have all of our jobs on our web site.We also started using Monster.com; we've purchased a contract with them so we've been posting our positions and information about them on Monster.
"Typically," offers Ms. Ramos
, "the filing to hiring period is about four to six weeks. So, if somebody is real motivated or real organized and they get their application in right away, they probably aren't going to hear from us for a few weeks."But unlike many employers, eventually they will hear one way or the other if they've applied for employment with the County."We communicate with every applicant whether they've gotten the position or not."
We're entering fall, a time of the year when the hiring process gets very busy."The new fiscal year begins on July 1st, so it always seems as though there are lots of people on vacation during the summer months but once the fall hits more people are applying.
