Inside SMPS University: An Interview with Amy Moen

SMPS talked with Amy Moen, CPSM, associate vice president, Haynes Whaley Associates, Inc., Houston, TX, about her recent participation in the SMPS University: Leadership Advancement Program. Developed through a partnership with the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, SMPS University was created specifically for A/E/C marketers and business developers seeking to achieve leadership positions in their firms and the industry. Moen is a graduate of SMPS U's Fall 2011 Class.
SMPS: Why did you decide to participate in the program? Amy Moen: My question has been, should I go back to school and get my MBA?
...
Moen: The company I'm working for really believes in continuing education and the value of networking, and they trusted my opinion. The timing worked out to be something that I could do, and from a budget standpoint, it was a win.
SMPS: What came out of the program that you valued the most? Moen: I especially enjoyed the financial session.
...
Moen: The assigned group project really challenged me.
...
Moen: Another session discussed leadership in the professional services firm and leadership transition.
...
Moen: It has reinforced some of those things we already do. We've been encouraging employees to give feedback, not just avoiding making changes or taking the initiative to do something in the firm, whether it's a process or training. We started meeting with a small group of employees who were interested and started making something happen. So we started brainstorming ways we could impact and help the firm grow, and build the leadership within our employees.
SMPS: How has your experience passed on to other people? Moen: The courses were so cram-packed with all kinds of great information. It's a long process, and so the challenge has just been finding the time to do it.
SMPS: What was your management's perception of the program? Any feedback? Moen: I have brought back quite a lot of information from the university experience, and it came at a time that it added to what we were already doing, so I'm not sure there was a dramatic change. It's been more of a slow build moving forward.
SMPS: Do you have any further thoughts, and how would you recommend the program to others? Moen: Before SMPS U, I would get great information at national and regional conferences, but this took it to way beyond the next level.
